What is domestic violence or gender violence?

It is abuse by a man of a woman simply because she is a woman.  This can take many forms: aggression can be physical, psychological, sexual, economic, etc., used as instruments of CONTROL and DOMINATION over a woman.

  • The commonest form of domestic violence is abuse of a woman by her partner or ex-partner
  • This isn’t a ‘personal’ or ‘private’ matter, it is an attack on the liberty and rights of the women (and children), and is a social scourge
  • It can happen in any setting – family, social, work, educational
  • Gender definition can be used to define how men or women ‘should’ be related to their gender assignation at birth, educated in inequalities -boys play with cars, girls with dolls; women are sensitive but men never cry for example
  • Obstructing equality between men and women
